World-record shark was pregnant
Criticism follows in wake of widely publicized catch off Boca Grande
The world-record hammerhead caught by a local fishing guide last month was big for a reason.
The 1,280-pound shark was pregnant with 55 babies — the largest number of pups scientists have ever seen — and due to give birth any day.
The pregnancy raises questions about the ethics of killing sharks for sport.
“It sends a bad signal to other fishermen that it’s OK to kill,” said Bob Heuter, senior scientist and director of the Center for Shark Research at Sarasota’s Mote Marine Laboratory.
The fish was snared by Gardens of Gulf Cove’s Bucky Dennis off Boca Grande in May. Dennis struggled for hours to reel in the shark and donated his catch to Mote for study because he didn’t have a way to freeze it.
The pregnancy gives marine biologists new information about the species’ ability to carry so many young in its womb.
The hammerhead most likely tops the old record, a 991-pound hammerhead, caught in 1982.
The fish was estimated to be 40 to 50 years old.
“I would never have killed her if I wasn’t going for the record,” Dennis said Thursday.
But some fisherman and scientists said they see problems with snaring and killing sharks to win a spot in the record books — especially when the fish is a pregnant female.
But they are not considered endangered, and it is legal in Florida to kill up to one shark per day for sport, despite evidence that shark populations are depleted 50 to 75 percent due to overfishing. Shark fins are considered a delicacy in some countries.
